Clinically-Led Spinal Injury Care At Home - Nurse On Phone

REGISTERED NURSE-LED CARE

Clinical oversight you can trust

Every client with spinal injury has regular reviews from our registered nurse team. They:

  • Train your care team in specialist interventions
  • Complete competency assessments
  • Monitor for complications
  • Update care plans as needs change
  • Coordinate with your consultants and therapists
  • Provide 24/7 clinical support

This isn't basic home care. It's clinical care delivered at home by teams who understand spinal injury.

Getting Started with Spinal Injury Support at Home

1. Free Clinical Assessment

Our registered nurses will visit your home (or hospital) to understand your spinal injury care needs, discuss your goals, and create a comprehensive care plan tailored to your situation - covering everything from respiratory support to daily routines.

2. Specialist Care Team Matching

Meet the specialist carers who'll be supporting you regularly. We carefully match you with carers trained in spinal injury interventions - because consistency and trust are essential when managing complex care like tracheostomy management, catheter care, and pressure area monitoring.

3. Bespoke Training & Competency

Every carer completes specialist training for your specific needs - whether that's autonomic dysreflexia protocols, ventilation support, or safe transfers. They undergo competency assessments before working independently, ensuring clinical expertise alongside compassionate care.

4. Care At Home Begins

Your care starts when you're ready. We'll make sure everyone - you, your family, and your carers - feels prepared and knows what to expect. Questions are normal, adjustments happen, and our clinical team is always available if you need them.

Receive specialist support whilst remaining in the place that matters most - your home.

We understand that arranging complex care feels daunting when you're already managing challenging medical conditions.

Our process starts with a comprehensive assessment where we understand your medical needs, personal preferences, and family situation. We work with your existing medical team to create seamless care plans.

SPINAL INJURY CARE FAQ

Questions families ask us

How quickly can spinal injury care be arranged at home?

For urgent situations like hospital discharge or care breakdown, our Fast-Track team can mobilise specialist spinal injury care within hours. This includes carers trained in tracheostomy management, catheter care, and autonomic dysreflexia protocols.

For planned care arrangements, we can potentially complete assessment and begin care within a week. We understand delays can mean extended hospital stays or unsafe situations at home, which is why rapid response is built into how we work.

What qualifications do carers need for spinal injury care?

No, we don't tie families into long-term contracts.

All carers supporting spinal injury clients complete specialist training delivered by our registered nurses. This includes tracheostomy care and suction, autonomic dysreflexia recognition and emergency response, catheter and stoma management, pressure area care and repositioning, safe moving and handling for spinal injuries, and ventilation support where needed.

Each carer must pass competency assessments before working independently, and training is updated regularly as your needs change. Our registered nurses provide ongoing clinical oversight and are available 24/7.

Do Routes carers work with my existing spinal injury medical team?

Absolutely. Coordinated care is essential for spinal injuries. Our registered nurses maintain regular communication with your spinal consultant, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, case managers, GPs, and any other healthcare professionals involved in your care.

We attend multidisciplinary team meetings (typically every 4-6 weeks), share care notes and observations with your medical team, implement recommendations from consultants and therapists into daily care, alert your medical team to any changes in your condition, and coordinate equipment provision and home adaptations.

We see ourselves as part of your healthcare team, not separate from it.

How much does spinal injury care at home actually cost?

Costs vary depending on the level of clinical intervention required, hours of support needed (visiting care vs 24/7 live-in care), staff ratios (some clients need 2:1 support during waking hours), and your location across Northern England.

Many people with spinal injuries are eligible for NHS Continuing Healthcare funding, which covers the full cost of care. Other funding options include Personal Health Budgets, Personal Injury Compensation settlements, Local Authority funding, or private funding.

We provide a clear, itemised cost breakdown following your free clinical assessment, with no hidden fees or setup charges.

Can I continue work, education or hobbies with spinal injury care support?

Yes. We support many clients to maintain employment, continue education, pursue hobbies, and stay socially active.

This might include morning care routines timed so you can get to work, support during the day if needed at your workplace or educational setting, assistance accessing community venues and activities, or help with adaptive equipment for hobbies.

We've supported clients to attend university, return to modified work roles, participate in sports like archery and shooting, go on family holidays and cruises, and maintain active social lives. Your care plan should enable the life you want, not restrict it.

How do you manage autonomic dysreflexia emergencies?

Every spinal injury client has a comprehensive emergency healthcare plan that all carers are trained on. For autonomic dysreflexia, this includes:

  • Recognising early warning signs (sudden high blood pressure, severe headache, flushing, sweating)
  • Rmmediate response protocols (sitting upright, loosening tight clothing, checking and emptying bladder)
  • Identifying and removing triggers
  • Blood pressure monitoring
  • Clear criteria for when to contact our 24/7 clinical team or call 999.

Your emergency plan is developed with your consultants and includes all your specific triggers and medical information. Carers carry this information at all times.
